The Impossible Connection

I want to share this beautiful poem by Sarah Kay with you. Enjoy!

When they bombed Hiroshima, the explosion formed a mini-supernova so every living animal, human or plant that received direct contact with the rays from that sun was instantly turned to ash. And what was left of the city soon followed. The long-lasting damage of nuclear radiation caused an entire city and its population to turn into powder.

When I was born, my mom says I looked around the whole hospital room with a stare that said, "This? I've done this before." She says I have old eyes.

When my Grandpa Genji died, I was only five years old, but I took my mom by the hand and told her, "Don't worry, he'll come back as a baby." And yet, for someone who's apparently done this already, I still haven't figured anything out yet. My knees still buckle every time I get on a stage. My self-confidence can be measured out in teaspoons mixed into my poetry, and it still always tastes funny in my mouth.

But in Hiroshima, some people were wiped clean away, leaving only a wristwatch or a diary page. So no matter that I have inhibitions to fill all my pockets, I keep trying, hoping that one day I'll write a poem I can be proud to let sit in a museum exhibit as the only proof I existed.

My parents named me Sarah, which is a biblical name. In the original story, God told Sarah she could do something impossible and she laughed, because the first Sarah, she didn't know what to do with impossible.

And me? Well, neither do I, but I see the impossible every day. Impossible is trying to connect in this world, trying to hold onto others while things are blowing up around you, knowing that while you're speaking, they aren't just waiting for their turn to talk -- they hear you. They feel exactly what you feel at the same time that you feel it. It's what I strive for every time I open my mouth -- that impossible connection.

There's this piece of wall in Hiroshima that was completely burnt black by the radiation. But on the front step, a person who was sitting there blocked the rays from hitting the stone. The only thing left now is a permanent shadow of positive light. After the A-bomb, specialists said it would take 75 years for the radiation-damaged soil of Hiroshima City to ever grow anything again. But that spring, there were new buds popping up from the earth.

When I meet you, in that moment, I'm no longer a part of your future. I start quickly becoming part of your past. But in that instant, I get to share your present. And you, you get to share mine. And that is the greatest present of all. So if you tell me I can do the impossible, I'll probably laugh at you.

I don't know if I can change the world yet, because I don't know that much about it -- and I don't know that much about reincarnation either, but if you make me laugh hard enough, sometimes I forget what century I'm in. This isn't my first time here. This isn't my last time here. These aren't the last words I'll share. But just in case, I'm trying my hardest to get it right this time around.

The First Woman in my Life

by Levi Tafari

A woman's work is never done
If you don't believe me ask my mum
She 1 ___(work) her fingers to the bone
To provide us with a decent home
If she 2___ (live) in Ancient Rome
She could have built that city on her own
She cooks, she cleans
She does everything
She irons decorates and does the shopping
She chastised us when we 3___ (be) rude
But never 4___ (send) us to bed with out food
Everyday she would change our clothes
If we 5 ___ (have) colds she would wipe our nose
Or if we 6___ (go) to mum with a problem
Mum would always help us solve them
We 7__ (not want) for anything
We 8___ (get) the greatest gift mum's loving
You can have ten aunties and scores of lovers
But remember you only have one mother
I remember when someone pointed a finger
Mum 9___ (say) I was Black, beautiful and I had culture
She always 10___ (make) sure we went to school
Because in this life you can't be a fool
You can see people will ride you like a mule
It was mum who 11__ (teach) me to be cool
So mother there's something I want you to know
I love you mum, I love you so
You taught me to survive in the ghetto
You can have my last ROLO
If it 12__ (be) not for you then I would not exist
So here it comes for you a kiss
Yes you was the first woman in my life
But one day I will take a wife
Then hopefully she'll become a mum
A woman's work is never done.

Mother do you think they'll like the song
Mother do you think they'll try to break my balls
Ooooh aah, Mother should I build a wall
Mother should I run for president
Mother should I trust the government
Mother will they put me in the firing line
Ooooh aah, is it just a waste of time

Hush now baby, baby don't you cry
Mama's gonna make all of your
Nightmares come true
Mama's gonna put all of her fears into you
Mama's gonna keep you right here
Under her wing
She won't let you fly but she might let you sing
Mama will keep baby cosy and warm
Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe
Of course Mama's gonna help build the wall

Mother do think she's good enough for me
Mother do think she's dangerous to me
Mother will she tear your little boy apart
Oooh aah, mother will she break my heart

Hush now baby, baby don't you cry
Mama's gonna check out all your girl friends for you
Mama won't let anyone dirty get through
Mama's gonna wait up till you get in
Mama will always find out where
You've been
Mamma's gonna keep baby healthy and clean
Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe
You'll always be a baby to me
Mother, did it need to be so high.

Cryin'
Aerosmith

There was a time
When I was so desperate
You weren’t much of a friend of mine
The cards have turned, yeah
'Cause me and them ways have parted
That kind of love was the dying kind

Listen, all I want is someone I can believe
I know all I need to know by the way
that I was blissed

I was smiling when I saw you
Now I'm tryin' to seduce you
Your love it dark misery
I was dyin' just to kiss you
Now I'm cryin' 'cause I let you
Do what you want - down on me

Now there's not even breathin' room
Between leisure and pain
Yeah you try when we're makin' love
Must be one and the same

It's down on me
Yeah I got to tell you a secret
It's been in my heart
Girl, I gotta say
We're partners in love
You got that special something
What you give to me
Takes my breath away
Now the word out on the street
Is the devil's in your lips
If our home goes up in flames
It's a fire I can't put out

I was cryin' when I met you
Now I'm tryin' to forget it
Your love is sweet surrender
I was cryin' just to get you
Now I'm dyin' 'cause I let you
Do what you do to me

'Cause what I got inside
Ain't where your love should hide
Yeah, our love, sweetheart, ain't love
'Til you give your soul away

I was cryin' when I met you
Now I'm tryin' to forget you
Your love is sweet and tender
I was cryin' just to get you
Now I'm dyin' just to let you
Do what you do what you do down on me,
baby, baby, baby
I was cryin' when I met you
Now I'm tryin' to forget you
Your love is sweet misery
I was cryin' when I met you
Now I'm dyin' 'cause I let you
Do what you do down to, down to, down to, down to
I was cryin' when I met you
Now I'm tryin' to forget you
Your love is sweet
I was cryin' when I met you

Mom

Strong families

What makes your  family strong?
Our world is changing. So are families. In many ways, it doesn’t matter how families are created but how family members interact and thrive.
Years ago, we had a narrow view of what a family should look like: a mom, a dad, two kids, a house, and a pet. Today, we have countless ways that families are created, and research shows that what makes a strong family isn’t the way the family was created—but how the family thrives.

Here’s an interesting bit of research for you to consider: Search Institute researchers recently identified a number of characteristics of a strong family. Here are some of the defining characteristics from the study:
  • They have support and encouragement from people around them.
  • They have a strong relationship with a partner or spouse.
  • They parent their kids in effective, successful ways.
  • They know their challenges and work to overcome them.
  • They find resources and people who help them be better parents.
  • How does your family perform one (or all of the actions above) to thrive?
  • What if money didn't matter?

    Get a Grip on Reality!

A controversial viewpoint by one of the most successful men in the world - if, of course by 'successful' you mean rich and famous...

So, if your aim is to succeed, then this might interest you:

11 Things They Don’t Teach in High School According to Bill Gates

Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this! Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair – get used to it!
Rule 2: The world won’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won’t be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.
Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.
Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.
Rule 6: If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent’s generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.
Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.
Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.

If you can read this – Thank a teacher.

    Love never dies

The marvellous Kate Bush, singing Wuthering Heights, a song inspired in the novel by English author Emily Brontë - the story of a love that never dies.

    Wuthering Heights Lyrics

Out on the wiley, windy moors
We'd roll and fall in green
You had a temper, like my jealousy
    Too hot, too greedy
    How could you leave me
When I needed to possess you?
I hated you, I loved you too

    Bad dreams in the night
They told me I was going to lose the fight
    Leave behind my wuthering, wuthering
    Wuthering Heights

Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy, I've come home
I'm so cold, let me in in-a-your-window
Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy, I've come home
I'm so cold, let me in in-a-your-window

Oh it gets dark, it gets lonely
On the other side from you
I pine alot, I find the lot
    Falls through without you
I'm coming back love, cruel Heathcliff
My one dream, my only master

Too long I roam in the night
I'm coming back to his side to put it right
I'm coming home to wuthering, wuthering
    Wuthering Heights

Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy, I've come home
I'm so cold, let me in in-a-your-window
Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy, I've come home
I'm so cold, let me in in-a-your-window

Ooh let me have it, let me grab your soul away
Ooh let me have it, let me grab your soul away
    You know it's me, Cathy

Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy come home
I'm so cold, let me in in-a-your-window
Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy come home
I'm so cold, let me in in-a-your-window
Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy come home
    I'm so cold

    Glossary:
    moors - charneca
    roam - vaguear

Wuthering Heights is a famous work of Gothic fiction by Emily Brontë. It is a tale of all-consuming romantic passion. Heathcliff and Catherine (Cathy) are the main characters in Wuthering Heights. The title of the Portuguese version is O Monte dos Vendavais.

Here is my favourite quote from Wuthering Heights:
"If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger: I should not seem a part of it." (Catherine, about Heathcliff)

Below, clips of the 1992 feature film adaptation of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights to the sound of Kate Bush.

Interesting data: Kate Bush was born in London on July, 30, 1958. Emily Brontë was born on 30 July 1818 in Thornton, near Bradford in Yorkshire.

Great moments I had with you I will not forget, because you've changed my life.
    I'm happy for you.
We are now in different spaces.
    I'm alone.
    I'm empty.
I will not die, maybe later.

    On the ground I lay
    Motionless in pain
I can see my life flashing before my eyes
    Did I fall asleep
    Is this all a dream
Wake me up, I'm living a nightmare

I will not die (I will not die)
    I will survive

I will not die, I'll wait here for you
I feel alive, when you're beside me
I will not die, I'll wait here for you
    In my time of dying

    On this bed I lay
    Losing everything
I can see my life passing me by
    Was it all too much
    Or just not enough
Wake me up, I'm living a nightmare

I will not die (I will not die)
    I will survive

I will not die, I'll wait here for you
I feel alive, when you're beside me
I will not die, I'll wait here for you
    In my time of dying

I will not die, I'll wait here for you
I will not die, when you're beside me
I will not die, I'll wait here for you
    In my time of dying
